PXG vs Callaway: Which One Should You Choose?

Callaway and PXG are two brands that have continued to innovate with their golf equipment. The PXG 0211, 0311, 0811, and the Callaway Epic, Apex, etc., are some of the best irons out there with incredible technology.

A lot of time, PXG irons are expensive, more so more than their Callaway counterparts. However, some specific Callaway irons like the Epic Irons are as expensive as some of PXG irons.

This way, it’s easier to compare since you’re not turned away by prohibitive prices, especially as an amateur. The Callaway Epic Irons and the PXG 0311 Irons come with prices that are very close even though the Callaway price still come short of the PXG’s.

PXG 0311 vs Callaway Epic Irons

Both the PXG 0311 and Callaway Epic Irons are a class of game-improvement irons. Each one with its own set of technologies for game improvement.

PXG 0311 Forged Irons

The PXG 0311 irons come with a merger of a perimeter weighting system and a multi-material blade-style head.

This puts a very high MOI (Moment of Inertia) at the head. As a result, the clubhead is more resistant to twisting, making the club more forgiving.

For an increased ball speed, HT77 steel is integrated into the ultra-thin face of the 0311. And a TPE (thermoplastic elastomer) is injected into the interior of the head to reduce vibration.

With a proper fitting and this combination of features, you can expect epic levels of performance with the PXG 0311. And that takes us to the next iron, which is the Epic.

Callaway Epic Forged Irons

The Epic Irons are the handiwork of Dr. Alan Hocknell, Callaway’s head of R&D. Like the 0311, the Epic Irons are infused with advanced technologies like the face cup for increasing ball speed and an Exo-cage body structure for added forgiveness.

All of these performance-enhancing technologies combine with a great feel, smooth appearance, and excellent workability to the Epic irons truly Epic. The focus of Callaway in this iron is to offer players better forgiveness, more distance, and feel.

Price

Both irons are top-end, high-budget irons that are not meant for the masses.

And as mentioned before, both clubs are performance-based requiring a big budget. In addition to that, the Callaway Epic is more affordable and therefore more budget-friendly than the Epic 0311.

Design

In the design department, PXG has definitely focused more on what’s on the inside than what’s outside.

With things like high speed, low-density COR2, DualCOR technology, softer polymer, and other properties that not only provide structural support to the ultra-thin face on the 0311.

But also better vibration dampening, improved face flex, high ball speeds, and better feel overall. This is in slight contrast to the technology found in the Callaway Epic.

In the case of the Epic Irons, we’ll be talking about things like 1025 carbon steel, tungsten core, and the new VFT (variable face thickness pattern. The Epic therefore will provide improved launch control, more consistent ball speed, and spin rate.

Final Thoughts

The Callaway Epic is designed to promote fast ball speed, long & consistent distance on all hits and spin rates. PXG 0311 irons, on the other hand, are optimized for forgiveness, workability, higher spin performance.

If you want high-charged performance and are not bothered by the price, you can check out the PXG 0311 Forged Irons. However, if you want to save a few hundred dollars, consider the Callaway Epic Forged Irons (because they’re cheaper).
