While golfing is an individual sport (in the sense that it’s just you playing against the course, for the most part), golfing can also be a social activity. Whether you’re hanging out with your friends or doing business, golf attire is most often what your golfing ability will be judged by. Here’s some advice on what to wear golfing, and we’ll have you out on the course in no time!
The Do’s and Don’ts of Golfing attire
Golf is different from other sports/workouts in the sense that it’s a bit more formal than other sports. Whether you’re playing at a club or a public course, you generally never want to wear athletic shorts or jeans. Khaki or plaid shorts should always come to about your knee (even though high-cut shorts can look pretty funny), and don’t assume everyone’s going to be dressed down at a public course. If you want a quick and short answer, in the summer you should wear khaki or plaid shorts/skirts with a belt and a golf (sporty) polo shirt, with maybe a hat or visor thrown in. When it’s colder outside, you’ll generally want to wear pants and a pullover.

Who Are You Trying to Impress?
Playing a round of golf by yourself or with friends is very different from playing with your boss. If you’re looking for attention and/or you know you’re the best player on the course, then it’s time to break out the flashy pants. If not, maybe something a little more subtle will do just fine. Whether they want to admit it or not, golfers’ first impressions are on the way that you dress, so if you want to seem professional, then you should look the part.
That Sure is a Lot…
While the golf attire may seem like a lot of rules and pettiness, once you have some golf clothes in your closet then you’ll be much more comfortable with figuring out what to wear. After all, it’s not as if you have to wear a new outfit every time you play a round. Respect is ultimately what golf comes down to, and the golf culture is one that prides itself on proper clothing and etiquette. If you’re still worried about what to wear golfing, you can always allay your fears by going shopping and buying a few shirts and some khakis.
